Legend of Zelda ceramic box (handmade)

By: stumpimusprime

WARNING. EMOTIONAL WORDS BELOW:

This is my pride and joy. During the very first moments that I was told I was required to make and design a ceramic box (in my ceramics class) this design swiftly began to unfold within my noggin.

Sadly, my teacher told me I wasn’t allowed to use “another person’s artwork” for a grade.

But that certainly didn’t stop me. I decided to make not one, but TWO boxes one of which I gave to my mother as a present and used for my “graded box”, the other was this beauty.

I cannot express how proud I am of this project. I really just can’t. Probably one of the main reasons I can’t is the fact that it probably looks like crap to anyone but me. It’s almost exactly what I’ve been imagining for the past three months, but IT’S REAL – and that is what really makes it worth so much more to me.

EMOTIONAL FLOW OVER. CONTINUING WITH THE NORMAL DESCRIPTION:

The front holds the idyllic symbol of Link’s shield and the Master Sword in the position of that in the Ocarina of Time intro. The left side (from the front with the shield) is supposed to represent Gannondorf’s hand, and the right side represents Link’s hand. On the back, is Fi, the human representation of the goddess sword. On the top, is of course the widely known Triforce. On the inside of the lid I wrote (in a form of ancient Hylian that I looked up) “Skyward Sword”.

The idea of the hands was really inspired by the requirement of my teacher (before she turned the idea down) that we had to have some kind of NOT flat cut for the lid so that it wouldn’t slide off. From there I decided to have the hands look like they were both reaching for the Triforce, and made Link’s hand ever-so-slightly higher than Gannon’s.

I realize now that either writing skyward sword or having Gannondorf’s hand just kind of made the theme a bit confusing and less harmonious, but you have to realize that I was so excited that I was hardly thinking about keeping the theme within ONE Legend of Zelda game when there are so many!

For people who are curious about more Ceramic-y things:

I used an Iron-Oxide as my final “glaze” or “finish” for everything on the box EXCEPT the Triforce. I put a yellow glaze and then a clear glaze on the Triforce (for extra shiny-ness and awesome) and on the inside I wrote “skyward sword” in clear glaze over the Iron-Oxide finish.
